Latvia can be duly proud of pristine and unpolluted nature, and a farming tradition which goes back many generations: this means that organic food is widely available all over Latvia.
A number of Riga's restaurants, for instance, Māja or Vincents, use in their cooking only the products grown or gifts of nature gathered in Latvia. When in Riga, take an opportunity of visiting these high class restaurants. Besides, there are also good cafes and shops that offer organic food to taste and buy. Every second Saturday, the Bergs Bazaar hosts 'green markets'. Ecological produce is available at Kalnciema Street quarter.
Local grown foodstuffs is also always available at the Riga Central Market and other markets in Riga and other cities and towns in Latvia.
If you happen to be travelling along the coast, do not miss an opportunity to stop at one of the stands selling smoked fish. These are local catch and taste delicious. A guest house might offer you an authentic Latvian style meal. The western region of Latvia, Kurzeme, boasts a regional specialty - vegetable-filled pies called sklandrauši. One of Kurzeme's loveliest towns, Sabile, offers local-grown wine which has been made by one of the northernmost wineries. When in Latgale, do taste home-made beer and farm produce. The countryside also gives a marvellous opportunity to taste the gifts of the forest – berries and mushrooms which can be bought in local markets or straight from the locals.
