Daugavpils Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Eastern Latvia (Latgale)

To the East of Latvia lies Russia. A border is a porous membrane through which a constant stream of people, culture and influences has flowed. This has trained the Latgalians to get to know their visitors, fast. Direct and hardy, their own language gives them a recognisable identity edge. Coupled with powerful influences such as the emotionality of the Polish and Lithuanian Catholic Church, and the artistic exuberance of the Vitebsk province that gave us Rothko, Chagall and Kandinsky, this is a different personality cocktail to the one by the sea.

Having no gold and silver with which to create the ornate candelabra observed in the manor houses, these resourceful innovators created baroque fantasies out of clay, a material they had in abundance. Striking then, that these folk live in the most placid and isolated land of lakes in Latvia. Fish for the taking (a modicum of talent required), silence for reflection, and just enough cabins and guest houses to make it accessible, just!
