Concert by Take 6
On November 30th, 19:00, the winners of 10 Grammy awards TAKE 6 will give a concert at Riga Congress Centre..The musicians have received 10 Grammy awards, 10 Dove awards, a Soul Train award and have been nominated for the NAACP Image award twice. The readers and music critics of the Downbeat magazine have entitled them the best vocal jazz group of the year seven years in a row.
TTake 6is an American a capella ensemble of six men. The story of the ensemble began at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama in 1980.Take 6are not only successful heirs to the traditions of the doo-wop and gospel vocal ensembles of the 1950s, but also the leaders in the so called second wave of vocal jazz groups that emerged in the early 1990s.Music critics call Take 6 the beginners of the new wave of a capella and the revivers of the traditions of rhythm and blues vocal groups.Their crystal clear vocals gained an unmixed appreciation by world music stars already with the first album.Their album The Standard, released in 2008, received particular appreciation from both the listeners and the critics. As suggested by the name itself, this album includes melodies from the jazz classics.
The album includes guest appearances by R&B stars Aaron Neville and Brian McKnight, as well jazz veterans George Benson, Al Jarreau and Jon Hendricks. The verdict of the critics was unanimous – three more Grammy awards to Take 6.Already after the first successes the swinging style and rich harmonic language of Take 6 drew the attention of music grandees and they were soon recording and performing together with Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. There was no time for resting on laurels – the ensemble actively continued giving concerts and recording albums and each step was leading them towards an even grater perfection.
