Riga City Festival 2014

Date:
15.08 - 17.08.2014
The Riga City Festival is the main annual event in Rīga. It is a kaleidoscope of musical, artistic, theatrical and dance performances, sports events and attractions. The festival also offers a wonderful opportunity to have a good time and gain new, unforgettable impressions. This year the Riga festival will build bridges from heart to heart, from a song to a dance, from music to art.

For three days different cultural and sports events like a symbolic string will intertwine the city centre and the Old Town, even stretching into more distant parts.

The festival will begin on Friday evening in Vērmane Garden where a special concert for their city will be played by the professional symphony band RĪGA and the composer Raimonds Pauls. On Saturday, the Vērmane Garden stage will host a theatre performance by schoolchildren, percussionists and guests from Taiwan and the Netherlands. In the evening, listeners will be treated to performance by a dixieland band playing retro melodies and songs sung by actors from the Valmiera theatre. All weekend we will be able to bake bread with professional bakers and read books with authors.

On the November 11 Embankment, Saturday will begin with shows of retro cars and motorcycles, while in the afternoon the air above the roofs will be filled with giant soap bubbles created by magicians; the evening will bring a musical performance for all tastes - from folk metal to jazz. The program’s headliner will be a original troupe of acrobats from Australia, “Strange Fruits”, with a performance high in the sky above the viewers’ heads.

On Dome Square, there will be a market; street musicians will fill the streets of the Old Town and ancient music will be performed at Saint Peter’s church and the Dome Garden. Here, under the medieval arches, a bridge between Latvia and Portugal will be built by {i>fado musicians. Meanwhile, street theatre troupes from Prague will bring their greetings from the bridges of their city, performing at the Town Hall, in Vērmane Garden and at Dome Square.

The festival will be celebrated not only in the city centre but also in Kalnciema Street, Imanta, Ķengarags and Ziemeļblāzma. The festival program will be complemented by the annual Riga Port Festival that will include the traditional 24-hour basketball match between both riverbanks, a paddle-boat contest and performances by street musicians. In the evening on Saturday the sky will light up with gracious flowers of fire to mark the time when water, air and fire come together to celebrate the festival.

Sunday will be the time to play and mess around. Families will be especially welcome on the November 11 Embankment where creative workshops will take place. This is where visitors will be able to follow the adventures of Sprīdītis, the beloved children’s character, and listen to music in a performance by Riga’s schoolchildren. Special activities for children will also take place in the Vērmane Garden and other places across the town.

Celebrate the festival! Celebrate Riga!
