Urban environment installation "Monument wars"

Date:
27.03 - 30.11.2014

The intersection between Brīvības Street and Elizabetes Street in Riga, once occupied by the monument to Lenin until the restoration of the independence of Latvia, has now become a platform for sculptors from Russia, Germany, Sweden and Poland. It is precisely these four countries whose history is closely intertwined with the history of Riga and Latvia.

The pedestal houses monuments by the four sculptors; every ten minutes one of the monuments rises from the pedestal for the public to see, competing with the other three monuments for attention.

The project "Monument wars" is part of the Riga - European Capital of Culture programme; it is based in historic context, emphasising the relationship between the authorities and the power of culture. Riga has always been a city at a crossroads. Every foreign power that has ruled the city tried to make this as apparent as possible, leaving behind monuments as witnesses to their presence.
