Breadmaking celebration at the Ethnographic Museum

Sunday, August 24, from 12 noon to 4 p.m., bread and breadmaking will be showcased at a special event in the Latvian Ethnographic Open-air Museum in Riga, where recipes, preparatory tasks, the baking process and savoring the end result will be presented  as tradition has it in various regions in Latvia.

Ancient and contemporary grain processing will be featured.

At the museum’s Vidzeme Homestead, the focus will be on threshing and grinding grain as in olden days. A sandwich-making workshop will be open, and Vidzeme porridge will be prepared and sampled. Song and dance will keep things festive, courtesy of the folklore ensemble "Dandari".

Zemgale Homestead will proudly present its foods like their own version of the doughnuts, while in Priede’s Tavern, make and taste-test pancakes, and , of course – bread. Loaves made by local bakers and enterprisers will be on sale.

Breadmaking will be celebrated in Kurzeme Homestead as well, and for entertainment the, join the ancient ritual of rhymes and games.
