Concert for Lent in Riga's "Ave Sol"

In "Ave Sol" Concert Hall, Sunday, March 16 at 3 p.m., the annual songfest marking Lent; starring the Riga Russian Orthodox chamber choir "Blagovest" and acclaimed baritone Samsons Izjumovs.

Music by such outstanding composers Pavel Chesnakov, Dmitri Bortniansky, Alexei  Lvov and Artemy Vedel is on the bill, highlighted by Rodion Shchedrin’s "The Sealed Angel", Russian liturgy for mixed chorus a cappella, Russian orthodox text (1988).

Public concerts at Lent are a Russian sacral music tradition since the 19th century, and composer Alexei Lvov is deemed the founder. The songs can be described as lilting, moving, soul-searching, as can be heard in the interpretation given them by one of Latvia’s finest vocal ensembles  - "Blagovest”, under the direction of Aleksandrs Brandavs, and the soloist - Latvian National Opera star, the world renowned Samsons Izjumovs.
