Kalnciema Quarter to mark Summer Solstice


The astronomical occurence known as Summer Solstice - June 21 – will be a special day for Riga’s Kalnciema Quarter as the traditional Herbs and Greenery Fair gathers vendors from all parts of Latvia with a wide variety of wares and foodstuffs, primarily focusing on that what is necessary for the upcoming holiday.

There will be plenty of enternainment too, with the robust womenfolk from the Suitu region – the ethnographic ensemble, „Suitu sievas”, front-center starting at 10 a.m. and continuing till 4 p.m., ably assisted by the youth ensemble „Suitiņi”, singing solstice folksongs and ditties.

 „Suitu sievas” will not only perform live but will head workshops for making flower and oak-leaf crowns and decorations, and proudly offer traditional foods from Kurzeme way -sklandu rauši – small rye pies filled with grated carrot and potato, sprinkled with caraway, and the hearty dish – koča, boiled buckwheat baked with chopped cured bacon and onion.

There will be plenty to keep the tots busy, like nursery rhymes and games, learning the many „Ligo!” songs and holiday adornment, also spoon-carving workshops.
