For people who wish to get a taste of culture on their visit to Latvia, seeing a ballet or opera performance at the Latvian National Opera is a must.

The new season, which begins on September 15, will include many of the "classic" performances that the Latvian National Opera has presented over the years. These include ballet performances such as Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake" and Adam’s "Giselle", as well as opera performances such as Verdi’s "La Traviata" and Puccini’s "Turandot".

The first new production of the season will be performed before the start of the new season – on September 2, the world premiere of the "manga" style opera "War Sum Up" will be performed at the Latvian National Opera, which will be sung in Japanese with surtitles in English and Latvian.

"War Sum Up" has been inspired from Japanese culture and "manga" style cartoons, and is a colorful opera about the nature of war, about ghosts, superheroes and post traumatic stress disorder in Japan.

The music of "War Sum Up" has been composed by British performance pop orchestra "The Irrepressibles" and local musician Santa Ratniece, and fuses together several styles of music, including chamber-pop, electronic music and traditional Japanese music. The opera’s libretto is taken from original Japanese theater plays, and will be performed in Japanese.

"War Sum Up" will also be later performed at the Oslo Opera, as well as in the Danish cities of Odense and Aarhus, and the Danish Royal Theater in Copenhagen.

Another new production for the new season is the ballet called "4 Worlds. 4 Elements". The ballet features four acts, each created by a different choreographer. The Latvian National Ballet company points out that the ballet "will take you along to a variety of worlds abounding in emotions, color, elements, and beauty. Four one-act ballets light up the universe of dance". Each act will also feature music from different composers - Arturs Maskats, Cesare  Pugni, Camille Saint-Saens and Peteris Vasks.
