Number of tourists in Latvian hotels up 15.7% in Q1

In the first quarter of 2014, 348,500 tourists were welcomed in hotels and other accommodation options, which is 15.7 percent more than in the first quarter of 2013, according to the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.

Among all visitors, 66.6 percent were from foreign countries, but 33.4 percent from Latvia. Similar data was registered in previous quarters as well. Compared to the first quarter of 2013, the number of foreign visitors has grown by 17.3 percent, Latvian visitors - 12.6 percent.

83.4 percent of all foreign visitors were accommodated in Riga, 7.6 percent - Jurmala, 1.3 percent - Liepaja. Among Latvian tourists, 29.7 percent stayed in Riga, 10.7 percent - Jurmala, 8.3 percent - Liepaja.

The total amount of overnights in the first quarter was 691,700, which is 3 percent more than last year. On average, foreign visitors stay in Latvia for two days.

Compared with last year's first quarter, the number of tourists from neighboring countries has grown - by 23.6 percent from Estonia, 19.8 percent from Russia, 19.3 percent from Belarus, 12.7 percent from Lithuania. The number of Polish tourists has grown as well - 44.8 percent, German tourists - 37.6 percent, French - 24.5 percent.

In total, Belarusian tourists have stayed in Latvia for longest - 3.8 nights, followed by the French - 2.3 nights, and the British - 2 nights.
