Thunderous ovation for gold medalist Strombergs at airport

Loud cheers, bouquets of flowers and traditional yellow cake awaited BMX cyclist Maris Strombergs yesterday as he stepped off the plane and onto the red carpet at Riga airport.

Loud cheers, bouquets of flowers and traditional yellow cake awaited BMX cyclist Maris Strombergs yesterday as he stepped off the plane and onto the red carpet at Riga airport.

Among others, he was greeted by 160 BMX-ers from all parts of Latvia, Latvian Olympic Committee officials and the education, science and sports minister.

Also arriving home from London was Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, who told the crowd that Latvian athletes and their achievements not only put Latvia on the map, but they also inspire the young generation to pursue sports and a healthy lifestyle.

The gold medal winner also spoke, thanking everyone for the welcome, his family, his team and his fellow competitors.
