It is an important step, since in several European countries underwater fishing has already become an integral part of the active tourism. So far, underwater fishing was allowed only in two rivers, four lakes and coastal waters.
Only harpoon rifles that can be loaded using muscle power, with no more than 10 centimetres wide spearhead, are allowed in Latvia.
A special underwater fishing license is also required.
Licensed underwater fishing is usually organized by the local governments, authorized legal entities or water body owners who have signed an agreement on organization of licensed underwater fishing with the local government.
