The World Choir Games will be held in Riga next summer, bringing choirs from all over the world to Latvia for ten days.

The 2014 World Choir Games will run from July 9 to July 19. During this period, Riga will be visited by a total of 20,000 singers from seventy countries, which will compete in 29 different categories, the "Riga 2014" organization's head Diana Civle told a press conference today. During the World Choir Games, there will be concerts, master classes, seminars and a great deal of other events, so every person could find one or more that he or she would like to attend.

World Choir Games Artistic Director Romans Vanags stressed that this would be an extraordinary event.

The World Choir Games next year will be remarkable for the fact that two world-famous choirs will visit Riga: "The Real Group" from Sweden and "The King's Singers" from Great Britain, who have already performed sold-out concerts in Riga, whereas this time they will visit the city to offer master classes. The world-famous composer Morten Lauridsen has confirmed that he will attend the World Choir Games as a special guest, said Vanags.

One of the most popular contemporary Latvian composers Eriks Esenvalds will also hold a master class during the World Choir games.

Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and three Baltic countries' boys choirs will perform the world premiere of Lauridsen's "Lux Eterna" during the Games.

Overall, about 100 events will take place in the city, including a concert at Mezaparks Grand Stage, six major concerts at "Arena Riga", plus a colorful procession. Concerts will also be performed in many other places all over the city, including the University of Latvia, churches and others. The choirs' performance will be rated by a jury, including experts from Latvia. Conductors Aija Birzina and Martins Klisans, composers Selga Mence, Eriks Esenvalds and Rihards Dubra have already confirmed their jury membership.

The World Choir Games will be the first event of such magnitude to take place in Riga, said Civle. They are held every two years, and the choirs compete in 29 categories.
