Crafts house in Liepaja

The building of the House of Craftsmen is one of the oldest stone buildings in the city - it is a typical example of the dwelling houses built in Liepāja at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. It was built for the burgomaster Joachim Schreder in 1699 and in 1700 it accommodated a special visitor - the Swedish King Charles XII.

Today Schreder's house is the House of Craftsmen where one can have a look at the world's longest amber necklace. In 2003 a campaign called “Leave your amber to Liepāja!” was organised in Liepāja, as a result of which the world's longest amber necklace was made of the amber pieces donated by the Liepāja residents. It is 123 m long and weighs 19.5 kg.

Here everyone has an excellent opportunity not only to see and buy handicraft works but also to watch how the masterpieces of craftsmen are made in the Saiva Applied Arts Studio.
