A.Pormalis created his early works while at Jēkabpils school. The artist-to-be continued studies at the Stiglitz Art School in St. Petersburg, and later joined the painting class of Jānis Kuga in the Academy of Art of Latvia. In 1928 Pormalis graduated form the Academy as ceramic artist (with a diploma project – a mantelpiece). Pormalis actively took part in exhibitions from 1927 onwards, and a fireplace of his design was awarded a silver medal at the Paris 1937 exhibition. Before World War Two Pormalis worked at the Riga School of Applied Arts, and later – in Rēzekne. Between 1946 and 1950, he was Director of the Jēkabpils Children's Art School. In 1959, Pormalis became member of the Artists Union.
