Richard Wagner started to compose his third opera in Riga, and exactly this work made him a world-renowned composer. The connection of the opera "Rienzi" and the composer with Riga is also highlighted in this production.

In Wagner's opus, "Rienzi" will introduce the year when Riga becomes the European Capital of Culture. The production includes not only compositions from the opera "Rienzi", but also electronic music of the new Latvian artist Voldemārs Johansons.

The symbolic campaign of people in which books from the old building of the National Library of Latvia (K. Barona Street 14) will be brought to the new modern building on the other bank of the River Daugava hand to hand will be one of the opening events of 2014.

The new building of the National Library of Latvia (Mūkusalas Street 3) is an important and new object of cultural infrastructure. Joining of hands for one purpose in the Baltic Way in 1989 brought independence. The joint chain of book friends will be a symbolic joining of hands and will confirm the value system in Riga and Latvia. Every inhabitant of Riga, Latvia and guests of Riga are invited to join hands for cultural values, their preservation and transfer to the next generations.

The project "1914" is one of the major events of the year of Riga as the European Capital of Culture. The central event of this project is an exhibition that comprises evidence in the form of visual arts from World War I as the starting point of Europe's historical, social and cultural development in the 20th century.

Many internationalcompetitions have taken place in the world over the previous 25 years, but already at the beginning of 2014, Riga will experience afantastic show and a championship at the same time.

For three days, teams from 12 counties ¾the USA, Australia, Estonia, Russia, Latvia, United Kingdom, Lithuania, Finland, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, as well as Sweden will form up to 6 meters high wood constructions that will be set on fire at the day of the championship and the jury will decide, which of theparticipants will be recognised as the world champion.

Moscow male choir "Pravoslavniye Pevchiye" (Orthodox Singers) was established in 1992, uniting the best professional singers from the Moscow church choirs. In Russia, where there is no shortage of outstanding choirs, it has deserved to be considered the best choir, which continues singing deacon choir tradition that exists in Russia since the 16th century.

The repertoire of the choir includes sacred Russian choral music since its beginnings until the 20th century with a special emphasis on the pre-revolutionary music of composers of the Moscow school, including ¾compositions by Alexander Kastalsky, Pavel Chesnokov, and Alexander Gretchaninov.
