“MARC CHAGALL AND THE EUROPEAN AVANT-GARDISTS” is the first collaboration project of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre and the Vitebsk Museum of Marc Chagall (Belarus) that will take place from 24th April to 10th July 2014.

It is the first collaboration project of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre and the Vitebsk Museum of Marc Chagall (Belarus). Besides the original artworks of Marc Chagall, the lithographs of many prominent artists of the 20th century will be exhibited, among them Braque, Matisse, Miró, Picasso.

Marc Chagall is one of the legendary artists of the 20th century. The artist, who has born in Vitebsk (Belarus) and died as the citizen of France, became the master whose signature style is undeniably recognized in different parts of the globe.

This exhibition presents the creative work of Marc Chagall on the scope of the 20th century avant-garde art classicism, stylistic innovations and formal search of the West European and American artists. The creative work of Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Fernand Léger, André Masson, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Antoni Tàpies and Raoul Ubac allowed to significantly expand the boundaries of art thinking of the time.

Latvian National Theatre presents a witty opera for the whole family.

The "Potato Opera" tells the story of the Potato Boy travelling from the Andes in Brazil to royal palaces in Europe and potato fields in Latvia. Music by Valts Pūce, libretto by Inese Zandere, and directed - Jan Willem van den Bos from the Netherlands.

Performers: Latvian National Theatre actors, Riga Cathedral Girls' Choir conducted by Aira Birziņa, a chamber orchestra and children from Latvian music schools.

The "Tenso Days" in Riga close with a spectacular concert in Riga Dome Cathedral on October 22.

The programme includes samples of French and Flemish polyphony from the Baroque era, Norwegian sacred folksongs, Pēteris Vasks and Arvo Part's music and new original compositions created in the Latvian Radio Choir's Sound Laboratory.

Performers: "Nederlands Kamerkoor" from the Netherlands, "Musicatreize" from France, "Det Norske Solistkor" from Norway, Latvian Radio Choir, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and soloists.

The Tenso Network Europe unites the European choirs since 2003. One of the four founders of the network and its driving force in terms of ideas is Latvian Radio Choir, which will host the international choir festival "Tenso Days in Riga" in October 2014, when Riga will become the capital of European professional choirs, organizing masterclasses for young composers, meetings of professionals, and concerts. "Tenso Days in Riga" will see the Latvian Radio Choir and other leading European professional choirs offering programs to the audiences never presented before.

Three prominent European choirs and Latvian National Symphony Orchestra unite for the performance of Stravinsky's "Symphony of Psalms".

October 18 at the Great Guild Hall, RIAS "Kammerchor" from Germany, "Eric Ericsons Kammarkör" from Sweden, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Latvian National Symphony Orchestra will come together under conductor Kaspars Putniņš as part of the "Tenso Days" for the performance of one of the most complex and greatest opus’ of 20th century choral music - Igor Stravinsky's "Symphony of Psalms".

The main themes of the "Tenso Days" programme - the mystical, the profane and the sacred - are the focal points where different music epochs from various countries meet ethnic choir culture, and novelties in choir music meet traditional choral performance, creating a synthesis of innovative vocal arts and other contemporary art forms.

The Tenso Network Europe unites the European choirs since 2003. Horizon ventures at an international contemporary art show.

Open to the public at the Latvian Railway History Museum May 22-July 20, the international contemporary art show with a theme - "Seeking the Horizon". Seeking, venturing and journeying as characteristic of art, connected to its essence – yearning for the ideal, and the desire to stand in crossroads unknown.

This exhibition consists of seven parts, each of them conjures up an ideal new world, and in addition, all reflecting the path of seek and find, with its joy of discovery, touch of deception, and illusory harmony.

Inga Kalna sings for you as the concert series "Born in Riga" continues.

The Riga-born Inga Kalna (soprano) is an internationally recognised soloist, what with successful engagements in Italy, France, UK, Canada, USA, Israel, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Netherlands, etc. Her repertoire includes lyric soprano arias from practically all famous European operas.

Inga Kalna’s recital is part of the concert series "Born in Riga", which spotlights Riga as a place bringing together world-renowned stars, as they got their start in the music field right here. Riga – the place that has given Europe and the world so many superb musicians.

New opera written by Latvian composer Arturs Maskats.

The creative team of the new opera ha striven to reflect the dramatic pages of Latvian history written in the years 1939-1944, which are significant for the record, culture and the spectrum of nations who lived in the territory of Latvia at the time. The inspiration of this opera was the legendary theatre and film critic and historian Valentīna Freimane. The personal story of the central character of the opera inseparably interweaves with the significant events of Latvian and European history and opens the panorama of the era in all its fullness of color and controversy.

In a visit and concerts in Riga, Mariss Jansons and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra would celebrate the centenarian jubilee of his father, conductor Arvīds Jansons.

Bringing two concert programs, presented in the National Opera of Latvia, in November 2014, Riga will be visited by world-famous Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons and the excellent Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. One of these concerts is Mariss Jansons’ centenarian dedication to his father, the outstanding conductor Arvīds Jansons.
