Pļaviņas obtained town rights in 1927. Before establishment of Pļaviņas Storage Pound due to construction of hydroelectric power plant the borders of the outskirts were by the castle mounds of Lokstene and Oliņkalns.
A Swedish military settlement and bastions built by Aiviekste estuary to Daugava have remained till today between the estuaries of Aiviekste and Skanstupīte to Daugava, and now the Park of Friendship (Draudzibas parks) is located in this territory.
Pļaviņas developed as a populated area on the land of Stukmaņi Manor in the 1990’s. The name of Pļaviņas was taken from the farmstead with such name. Gostiņi, a small town, has been added to Pļaviņas since 1956. In the beginning the main population of Gostiņi was Israel.
The dolomite walls of buildings in Pļaviņas confirm the architectural uniqueness of the municipality.

Pļaviņas has the following neighbouring parishes – Klintaine parish on west, Aiviekste parish on north, Krustpils parish of Jēkabpils district on south, and Sēlpils parish over Daugava River. The motor road A6 Riga – Pāternieki with a detour across the town’s northern border is crossing the town. It is also the beginning of motor roads P37 to Gulbene and P78 to Ērgļi. Pļaviņas is also crossed by the railway line Riga – Krustpils and it is the beginning of railway line to Gulbene.
The name of Vietalva means „place of tin”. Old stories say that a long time ago tin has been obtained here. The parish is rich with lakes - Vabulītis, Alvītis, Apaļais, Baltenītis, Tulmenītis, Zvanu Lake referred to in many legends, etc. One of the largest listed trees in Latvia with perimeter of 7.8 m is growing by Jaunāmuiža.

OdzeLake, which is clean and rich with fish, is located in this parish. The sports and recreation complex Mežezers popular in amongst tourists and local residents has been established on the bank of the lake. The picturesque Līdace Lake lays by a forest. The cultural historic heritage of the parish is related with archaeological monuments, i.e., Puduļi castle mound, Draudavi ancient burial site, Krievciems watermill, and triple-span stone bridge over Veseta River. Dolomite, sand and gravel quarries are in amongst the values of Aiviekste parish.
The parish is unique due to its architectural monuments - Kaķkalns, Avotiņkalns, Oliņkalns, Vīnakalns and ancient burial site and Kalnapeļņi ancient burial site. Stukmaņi Manor complex is a state-importance monument. State-importance historical monument Robežakmens (Border Stone), which marked the border between the lands of Riga Archbishop and Livonian Order, is located at the 120th km of the motor road Riga – Daugavpils.
