At the end of 1920ies, Latvian art was becoming influenced by Belgian artists, which developed further in the 1930ies to the "Belgian trend" in the local painting. Even though Latvian artists also got inspired by contemporary French artists, classical poetry masters from Europe and other patterns, contemporary critics and Latvian art historians always highlight the critical influence from Belgian art, which overwhelmed other inspiration sources.
