European Capital of Culture Year in Riga Coming to Close

For just a few days yet Riga will be the European Capital of Culture, and already in January 2015 the title will be passed over to the Czech city of Plzeň and the Belgian city of Mons.

Many of the European Capital of Culture events will continue into 2015. Exhibition of Lavian design objects “Earthworks” will be on show at the design salon “Xcelsior”, 37 Kalnciema Street, until January 10, and artist Aija Bley’s solo exhibition “Love Stories” will run until January 14 at the Riga Art Space.

Furthermore, exhibition “Surprising Lace” will be on display in St. Peter’s Church until January 18, and exhibition “The Amber of Tutankhamun” at the Art Museum Riga Bourse will run until January 25. In addition, the impressive exhibition “Le plan du film and Other Scenarios” by the French contemporary art icon ORLAN, also part of the European Capital of Culture programme, will continue until the end of January.

Year 2015 will pass under the aegis of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for Latvia. Projects that started as part of the European Capital of Culture programme will continue during the first part of next year. Exhibition “1514. The Book. 2014” will be on show at the new Latvian National Library building, and a major exhibition dedicated to amber, “Amber – the Precious Stone of the Baltic Sea” will be on show at the Latvian National Museum of Art.

Exhibition “Film Trophies” will run until April 5 at the Riga Film Museum, whereas exhibition “Amber through the Ages” that opened during the European Capital of Culture year will be on show at the Latvian Museum of Natural History. Finally, one of the most memorable musical events closing the year of 2014, Artūrs Maskats’ opera “Valentina” will be staged at the Berlin State Opera in May 2015.
