Global Virotherapy Cancer Clinic opens in resort city of Jurmala
A half a million euros have been invested in the new cancer treatment clinic, providing the possibility of unique therapy for patients worldwide.
The patients of the Centre of Excellence are provided with a full cycle of virotherapy and high-level service both in the clinic and remotely, when the patient remains in his home country during the follow-up stage.
Latvia can be considered a pioneer of virotherapy. Virotherapy is the treatment of cancer using a specific oncolytic virus, which is able to find and destroy malignant cells. Virotherapy is a mild and safe treatment method for cancer that improves survival and the quality of life of patients. The first oncolytic virus introduced in clinical practice in the world is RIGVIR® (Riga virus), which was discovered by Professor Aina Muceniece in the 1960s.
The International Virotherapy Centre was founded in 2008 under the guidance of the eminent scientist Aina Muceniece, and it has received extensive international attention for achievements in the treatment of malignant tumours. The creation of the Virotherapy Centre of Excellence and therapy with the oncolytic virus RIGVIR® represent another step forward.
RIGVIR® is used for the treatment of cancer of all stages, and no serious adverse reactions have been observed. Riga virus also improves the immunity of the body, which is particularly important if the body of the patient is debilitated following the fight with disease, e.g. during chemotherapy.
RIGVIR® is used for the treatment of both melanoma and other types of cancer, e.g., for the treatment of malignant tumours of the stomach, large and small intestine, pancreas, urinary bladder, prostate, lungs, womb, kidneys, and other malignancies.
Patients in more than 40 countries of the world, and primarily in the US, have already received therapy with Rigvir®. Until now the treatment has been performed in private clinics of Latvia, mostly “Premium Medical”, but during the stay patients lived in hotels. The new Virotherapy Centre of Excellence in the resort city of Jurmala offers full-treatment service – diagnostics, virotherapy, physiotherapy, and improvement of immunity following chemotherapy, as well as collaboration with nutrition professionals and other services.
The Virotherapy Centre of Excellence is located in a quiet place in Jurmala surrounded by imposing pines. It is able to provide virotherapy in the clinic for 10 to 12 people at the same time.
