LNSO to be in a Bernstein mood at year's end

A surprising but welcome choice by Andris Poga and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) at its concerts bidding farewell to 2014 – the seldom heard 1953 Broadway musical “Wonderful Town”.

Andris Poga will conduct a superb lineup – Kim Chriswell (USA), Ieva Parša, Intars Busulis (Latvia) Kostas Smoriginas (Lithuania) and the State Choir “Latvija”. And last, but not least – LNSO.

“Wonderful Town” is the familiar tale (“My Sister Eileen”) of two sisters from Ohio seeking success in New York City, but encountering a bumpy road, and a crew of colorful characters. Back in 1953, Rosalind Russell jumped from screen to stage as elder sister, Ruth, lighting up the Broadway season with her adroit clowning.

LNSO musicians say they have selected this lighthearted, at times rowdy, work by Bernstein for their Year-end concerts because it coincides with the emotional, hectic, and, of course, happy time of year when we greet the New Year.

“Wonderful Town” in concert: December 28,29,30 in the Great Guild, Old Town, Amatu ielā 6, Rīga.
