Riga receives great attention in conference tourism

04.04.2016

In 2015 almost 600 international conferences, congresses, and corporate events took place in our capital.

One-third of the international events held in Riga last year were related to the fact that during the first half of the year Latvia was the Presidency country of the European Council of the EU. However, more than 250 events were conferences and congresses not related to the Presidency, and around 100 were international corporate events.

Out of all the events that were not related to the Presidency, 45 were events organised by different European associations approved also by the International Congress, Conference, and Corporate Events Association (ICCA). The three largest conferences were devoted to the medicine and IT fields, and the total number of participants from more than 26 countries reached 4700 people.

Director of the Riga Tourism Development Bureau (RTDB) brand “MEET RĪGA” Aigars Smiltāns emphasizes: “It is clearly seen that Riga is becoming increasingly popular as a place where conferences, congresses, and corporate events are organised. It is also understandable because we are able to offer a competitive price and good quality of services. Riga is very accessible by various means of transport, and our capital is like a pearl that makes every event so special.”

According to information provided by RTDB, many significant international events will also be held in Riga this year.

“Although safety concerns have affected the tourism area all around Europe and large-scale conferences are frequently cancelled, Riga has managed to attract several important events. One of the largest conferences is planned in September of this year. This will be four days long with 3400 participants”, says Aigars Smiltāns.

The Latvian National Library has become one of the most popular new conference events in Riga. Conferences are successfully organised also in academic educational establishments, such as the University of Latvia and Riga Technical University.
