Sigulda Opera Festival and Umberto Giordano opera "André Chénier"

This summer for the 26th time the Sigulda Castle of the Livonian Order will become an impressive venue for one of the most outstanding musical events in Latvia - the International Sigulda Opera Festival.

Widely loved festivity this time will take place from July 27th to July 29th. Visitors will have both the pleasure to meet, see and hear again the artists, who have already been playing in Sigulda and enjoy musical surprises, which will be offered by various world opera soloists, who will perform in Sigulda for the first time.

The Sigulda Opera Festival will begin on July 27 at 19:00 pm with the Festive Overture – an inaugural concert in Sigulda's New Castle Garden.

The concert will feature brilliant local artists - Viktorija Pakalniece (soprano), Edgars Ošleja (bass), Daumants Liepiņš (piano) and Madara Liepiņa (violin).

July 28 at 15:00 pm in Sigulda's New Castle Garden there will be a concert "New stars for Latvia" („Jaunās zvaigznes Latvijai”). On the same night at the same day at 21:00 pm in Sigulda Castle Ruins there will be featured the open-air original production of Umberto Giordano opera "André Chénier".

The Italian composer’s Umberto Giordano opera is the brightest achievement of this master of sound art. Its premiere took place in 1896 in Milan opera-house La Scala, and it belongs to the most popular Italian operas.

This is an emotional story about a real historical personality - the poet and publicist of the Great French Revolution, André Chénier (1762-1794).

In Latvia the opera "André Chénier" has been staged in the far 1928 with an update in 1937. Since then the composer Umberto Giordano historical opera has not been shown.

In the open-air original production, which will be made unforgettable also for the venue - Sigulda Castle Ruins, with wonderful views of the Gauja National Park, will perform also outstanding performers such as Maija Kovaļevska, Kamens Čanevs (Bulgaria), Ilona Bagele, Irma Pavāre, Mihails Čulpajevs, Krišjānis Norvelis and others.

On July 29 at 13:00 pm Sigulda Evangelical Lutheran Church will host a traditional concert of sacred music.

The International Sigulda Opera Festival closes on July 29. At the end at 18:00 pm as usual there will be the gorgeous Gala Concert "Marina Rebeka and Latvian Pearls of Opera", which will feature not only the wonderful voice owner Marina Rebeka, but also other bright stars such as Inga Šļubovska-Kancēviča, Andris Ludvigs, Kalvis Kalniņš, Dināra Rudāne, Rihards Mačanovskis and others.
