Three new productions promised by the White House in spring of 2017
Latvian National Opera and Ballet Theatre offers to meet outstanding masters and stars.
Even though there are many white houses in Latvia, we know well that the White House means the Latvian National Opera and Ballet Theatre located in the very heart of the capital, by the Riga Channel.
The beautiful building was opened in 1863. Even though the history has been harsh, the White House has not lost its charm, and internationally highly valued opera and ballet artists inhabit it as a living, creative organism.
In the first half of 2017, three productions of classical values will be available for viewing: in March, opera "Carmen" by Georges Bizet; in April, "At the Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss; in May, opera "Tannhauser" by Richard Wagner.
Repertoir will include also a production staged for the first time in autumn of 2016: opera "Eugene Onegin" by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, opera "Faust" by Charles Gounod, and ballet "Peer Gynt" created on the basis of music by Edvard Grieg.
Spectators will also be able to enjoy the older productions, both those considered to be classical values, for example, opera "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi and ballet "Swan Lake" by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, as well as popular staging of the Latvian composer Janis Lusens for children, "The Birds' Opera", and original works by other contemporary Latvian authors, for example, opera "Valentina" by Arturs Maskats and opera "The Immured" by Eriks Esenvalds.
A special event in the life of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet Theatre will be the concert production of the dramatic opera "Norma" by Vincenzo Bellini taking place on April 14. It will be conducted by one of the most excellent contemporary conductors, Italian Speranza Skapucci, but the main roles will be played by the excellent opera stars born in Latvia - Marina Rebeka and Aleksandrs Antonenko.
Just like in previous years, at the end of spring season of 2017 Riga Opera Festival will take place. It will be held on June 8 - 18 under the title of "Viva Romantica" and will invite us to embark on romantic musical experiences.
