Extensive cultural and recreational program planned for Riga on May 4 Restoration of Independence Day

Riga will celebrate the May 4 Restoration of Independence Day with various concerts, athletic events, art and music performances, events for children, and the traditional "flower carpet" at the Freedom Monument.

Riga City Council informs that this year, events are being planned not just downtown but also in neighborhoods and suburbs.

A hot-air balloon show, called "Visions of Riga", is one of the key events planned for May 4 at the Daugava Embankment.

Family relays, children's competitions, mini-golf, wakeboard and kiteboard competitions, a cycling competition and other events will take place In the newly-built Lucavsala recreation area, as well as several music and dance performances.

Traditionally, the flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., plus Latvian education institutions' brass bands will be performing on the Esplanade from 11 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. The official flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument is scheduled for 2 p.m.

In another tradition, residents are offered to participate in various athletic activities on the Daugava Embankment, culminating the tug of war contest. In the evening, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., popular Latvian musicians will perform in a concert at the Daugava Embankment; the concert will close with a performance by the popular band "Instrumenti".

Several events are planned for the Vecmilgravis neighborhood on May 4 and 5, where the culture center "Ziemelblazma" and the park will open after renovation - concerts by various popular bands and musicians, events for children, sightseeing tours and many others.

Various creative studios, students from Riga music schools will offer performances on the AB Jetty and art gallery "Noass", and there will be various creative workshops for adults and kids.

Also, May 4 will be celebrated in the Kengarags Neighborhood - there will be various family events, chess and table tennis tournaments, creative workshops, exhibitions and concerts.

A variety of events will take place in Riga culture centers and museums, the traditional film marathon will take place at the "Splendid Palace" movie theater, whereas Vermanes Park will offer multiple events for children and Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian rock bands' concert in the evening.

The organization of the May 4 events in Riga is supported by the Riga City Council.
