A young seal strayed into the Riga Canal today, LETA observed.

Residents reported the fact to the State Fire and Rescue Service after observing that one of the seal's flippers had gotten stuck between two posts supporting the bank of the canal.

A few minutes later though the animal managed to free itself and left, Fire and Rescue Service representative Inga Vetere told LETA.

Riga Zoo representative Laura Lidaka told LETA that if a seal is healthy, strong and able to swim, there is no need to take it to the zoo right away - it will most probably find the way back to the sea itself.
