Saulkrasti is located 50 km from Riga, on the east coast of the Gulf of Riga. Part of the territory of Saulkrasti Municipality is taken up by the nature park “Piejūra”, the seacoast section stretches for 17 km and is interesting with its diversity – from the “singing” sand in Lilaste to the stony seashore of Zvejniekciems. It is also possible to view the most enchanting sunsets in Saulkrasti.
History of the town
The seashore with its steep banks and winding streams is one of the most beautiful of its kind in Vidzeme, and it has been a popular vacation destination for a very long time.
In early 19th c. the first summer cottages were built, a new bathing place with the name Neubad (Neibāde) was created and in the mid-19th c. the resort grew extensively.

- White Dune – the 18 m high dune is a great place for looking over the Gulf of Riga. If you wish to experience an energetic walk and breathe in the sea air, go and enjoy the 4 km long forest trail, stretching along the seashore from the White Dune to Sun Bridge.
- Saulkrasti Bicycle Museum – showcasing the only old bicycle collection in Latvia and the largest one in the Baltics. It is formed out of the technically most interesting historical examples of bicycle development that have been found in Latvia.
- Seaside Park – by continuing the old traditions of the resort, there has been a bathing place named “Centre” created in Saulkrasti, and it also possess the Blue Flag. The Seaside Park invites everyone to enjoy sunsets from comfortable sun loungers, as well as to use the playground equipment, outdoor exercising facilities, gymnastics equipment and volleyball courts.
On sunny and warm summer days when there is no wind, it is possible to rent SUP boards at the bathing place Centre, as well as go on jet-ski rides.
On windy days surfers and kitesurfers gather on the beach next to the café Koklīte.
Adrenaline lovers are invited to the paintball park Bušas, whereas those who enjoy horseback riding are welcome at Saules zirgi to take pleasure from horse rides and romantic sunsets on the beach.
Cycling enthusiasts can rent bicycles and try out routes of various difficulties not only in Saulkrasti, but along the whole coast of Vidzeme.
The international jazz festival Saulkrasti Jazz takes place in Saulkrasti every year, gathering not only the best jazz musicians from Latvia, but also the best artists from abroad.
Saulkrasti Festival has become an annual tradition, and during it one can enjoy a sunset concert at the White Dune, as well as a brilliant concert at the Saulkrasti Open-Air Stage.
In order to welcome the summer, the season opening event “Ieripo Saulkrastu Vasarā!” takes place every year with a glorious cycling ride from Saulkrasti Bicycle Museum to Sun Square.
It is easy to get to Saulkrasti from Riga by bus or by train. Public transportation runs hourly from Riga International Coach Terminal and Riga Central Railway Station.
