Every year, for one weekend between July and September, the Latvian countryside becomes a culinary hub during the “Home Café Days.” Farms and country homes turn into restaurants for a day or two, where guests are warmly welcomed and treated to carefully prepared dishes. On these days, local people who do not normally host guests or cook for a living become chefs and hosts, but who, with warmth and pride, celebrate the flavors of their families and region by serving home-cooked dishes that preserve stories and traditions. During “Home Café Days,” you can enjoy:

  • homemade cheeses with caraway seeds and honey;
  • sour porridge, buckwheat porridge, and other beloved porridges;
  • sklandrausis—carrot and potato pies characteristic of Kurzeme;
  • fish soups made from fish caught in the local lakes of Latgale and along the Baltic Sea coast;
  • cakes and rolls made with free-range eggs and berries grown in local gardens;
  • freshly baked rye bread;
  • special zucchini and tomato dishes;
  • pancakes—both thin and stuffed, as well as the much-loved potato pancakes;
  • stews and casseroles;
  • birch sap, garden berry lemonades, and even a few stronger drinks.

When visiting “Home Café Days,” please note:

  • Guests at the home cafés can also enjoy musical performances, games, tours of the farm or craft workshops, and other activities.
  • When planning your route, please register your visit so that the hosts can plan for the flow of guests and avoid unexpected lines.
  • These are not “real” cafes, and the hosts may not have prior experience in serving guests. The essence of a home café is visiting and enjoying home-cooked food.
  • All “Home Café Day” participants have attended a lecture by the Food and Veterinary Service on hygiene standards in the food industry.
  • Please note the date and time of the home café’s offering. The standard event hours are from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, or as specified in each participant’s listing.
  • Payments at home cafés are accepted in cash only.
  • “Home Café Days” is more than just a meal—it’s a chance to meet people who live in harmony with the land, the seasons, and family traditions.
