Latvian National Opera and Ballet pledge 5 new productions

In the season 2017/2018, we will listen to the wonderful voices of Aleksandrs Antonenko, Inga Kalna and other excellent opera artists – we will enjoy performances by bright international stars.

In the new season, Latvian National Opera and Ballet will delight visitors with five new productions. In November, it will be the premiere of ballet “Don Juan” with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Frederic Chopin. The new production is made by the remarkable choreograph of Cuban descent Julio Arozarena.

February will come with Igor Stravinksy’s opera “The Rake’s Progress”, which was first produced in “Teatro La Fenice” in Venice in 1951, but now it will be performed for the first time on the stage of Latvian opera theatre.

The joyful opera buffa masterpiece “Don Pasquale” by major opera composer Gaetano Donizetti will arrive at the end of the season - in May. This new production will be made by music director Mārtiņš Ozoliņš in collaboration with a creative team from Italy – director and scenic designer Giorgio Corsetti and others.

An important role in this season will play Latvian composers. With the premiere of the opera “Turaidas Roze”, the popular Latvian composer Zigmārs Liepiņš will go to the viewers in his jubilee year.

It is a new production, both music and dramaturgy are changed, of the opera “No rozes un asinīm”, with a message about love that is stronger than death.

Ballet lovers can look forward to seeing ballet “Antonija #Silmači” of Latvian composer Juris Karlsons. Rūdolfs Blaumanis is one the most popular Latvian writers of the all time, and his play “Skroderdienas Silmačos” is a classic about feelings of love that tear apart the heart of the mistress of house „Silmači”, Antonija. Because of this intrigue, this ballet premiere is eagerly awaited.

In the season 2017/2018, there will be the premiere of the renewed production of Giacomo Puccini’s opera „Turandot”. Since its premiere in 1973, this opera has almost never been excluded from opera house programmes because the resplendent visuals lead viewers in a wonderful trip to ancient China but the beautiful music melts the coldest hearts.

During the whole season, excellent Latvian artists and international masters will delight visitors of Latvian National Opera and Ballet. For example, on 14th January a concert performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Ernani” will assemble a group of excellent stars. At the conductor’s stand will be the world famous conductor Daniel Oren but in the principal roles we will hear such opera stars as Dinara Aliyeva and Andreas Bauer, Luc Robert and Franco Vassallo.

Several events in the new season will be dedicated to the centenary of the Latvian State and also the troupe of Latvian National Opera that will be celebrated in the season 2018/2019.

A special event will be the exchanged guest performances of Latvian and Estonian opera and ballet from the 27th February until 1st March – an original present for our countries both celebrating the centenary of statehood in 2018.

Estonian National Opera will offer Paul Hindemith’s opera „Cardillac” and Eduard Tubin’s ballet „The Goblin”, but Latvian National Opera and Ballet will bring to Tallinn Giuseppe Verdi’s opera „Nabucco”, as well as ballet „Scheherezade and her tales”.

Widely popular Latvian Opera Festival will take place from 6th June until 27th June 2018. Celebrating Latvia’s centenary, one week of the festival will be dedicated to Latvian contemporary opera but in the second week of the festival, there will be performances of all of the season’s new productions. Gala concert, as always, will be splendid and uplifting.
