The Winter Solstice event in the Jelgava Old Town Street Quarter, as every year, takes place in the best Latvian traditions. But this year it promises to be truly exciting! Old Town Street is decorated with strings of lights, a beautifully adorned Christmass tree, and a photo corner with sleighs in the courtyard of the Jelgava Old Town House. There will be songs and dances accompanied by the folklore group Dimzēns, log-dragging, workshops for traditional mummers’ masks, rattles, and Winter Solstice decorations, as well as the pouring of wax fortunes. In addition, the most interesting traditional Latvian masks and mummers’ costumes will be awarded! Everyone will have the chance to learn something new about Winter Solstice traditions from folklore expert Baiba Ērgle, taste grey peas, and help cook sauerkraut soup over an open fire. Visitors will also have a unique opportunity to take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage! During the event, there will be a market featuring local producers and artisans, and a photo booth offering instant prints. The event will conclude with a concert by the folk group Dārdi. All event activities will be free of charge for visitors.
