In 1399 German crusaders built a powerful fortress on the hill between Small and Big Lakes of Ludza. The three-story stone building with 6 towers, 3 gates, and 2 castle-fronts. The castle was built from grey stones and red bricks, decorated with black glazed bricks.
The castle-hill is one of the favorite walking places in the town, there is a splendid view over the town from the hill. Of course, there are several beautiful legends about the castle, its prince and bewitched princess.
