The number of stays for the night in Riga tourism accommodations exceeded 2.6 million in 2017


The capital of Latvia, known as the hidden pearl, becomes more and more popular.

Statistics show that last year Riga hotels and other tourist accommodations served 1.4 million foreign tourists, which is by 11.5% more than in 2016. Whereas, the total number of nights spent by foreign tourists in Riga was 2.6 million, which is by 9.5% more than the year before.

The greatest increase is in the number of tourists coming from Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania, France and Finland.

In 2017, the largest number of the foreign tourists welcomed in Riga hotels and other tourist accommodations were from Russia (12%), Germany (11,5%), Estonia (8%), Lithuania (7%), Finland (7%), the Great Britain (6%), Sweden, Norway, Italy.

and the United States.

The Head of the Riga Tourism Development Bureau Vita Jermoloviča attributes the successful growth to several factors. Among them is listed the successful advertising and cooperation with journalists and bloggers as well as the opening of several new flight destinations not only in the traditional markets as, for example, Finland, Norway, Italy, Russia and Spain, but also in new ones – the United Arab Emirates, Israel, etc.

In last year, 130 tourist accommodations operated in Riga in total, which is for 11 accommodations more than in 2016. The total number of beds available in Riga in last year was 15,788 which, compared to the year 2016, is for 4.5% more.

The highest occupancy of Riga hotels was witnessed in July – 74.3%, in June (70.7%), and in August (70.6%).

Riga tourism statistics were positively impacted by the number of guests serviced by the Passenger Port. In total, the Riga port served 830,380 passengers in the last year, which is by 43% more than in 2016. Besides, in 2017, the port served 87,384 cruise-ship passengers, which means an increase of 22%.
